The B.Tech Programme

The B Tech Programmes at NIIT University uses the University’s four core principles: Industry-linked, Technology-based, Research-driven and Seamless, as its foundation. NU demands and encourages students to explore and connect with the multiple dimensions of today’s technology and business environment. B Tech Programmes are offered at NIIT University through a transformational process involving multidisciplinary courses of Engineering, Humanities and Social Sciences, laboratories, R&D projects, Industry Practice, in addition to other co-curricular components, the B Tech Programmes seek to create exceptional leaders trained to operate in tomorrow’s complex technology-oriented business environment. The 4-year B Tech programme comprises 8 semesters. The courses are categorized into:

  • Programme Core - Humanities, Social Sciences & Management - to acquire interdisciplinary knowledge
  • Professional Core - to gain proficiency in domain area
  • Basic Sciences - Mathematics & Sciences - to develop analytical ability
  • Professional Electives - to specialize in an industry-specific domain
  • R&D Project - to inculcate a strong research bent of mind
  • Open Electives - to orient towards professional interests
  • Industry Practice - to build seamlessness with the world of work through Industry-work or Industry-oriented research

The first four semesters of the B Tech Programmes are devoted to theoretical and hands-on laboratory training in Programme Core, Basic Sciences, and foundational courses from Professional Core. This is followed by advanced courses spread over the next three semesters along with an R&D project. The final semester is dedicated to Industry Practice (IP) wherein students get to work on real-life projects outside the college and in the industry for six months leading to the completion of the B Tech Programme. Thus, the B Tech Programme is the sum total of education measures undertaken to develop holistic and responsible individuals with life-long learning capability as there is a strong emphasis to ensure that students 'Learn to learn'.

Activity-Oriented Credit-based Courses for B.Tech under HSS Category

It is a well-recognized fact that success in the world of work is not achieved merely by being good in knowledge domain, but it is also determined by the so called non-academic attributes or qualities possessed by an individual, such as collaboration and cooperation or team work, ability to withstand the time pressure without loss of focus, planning and organizing abilities, leadership, etc.

The co-curricular activities undertaken in the numerous clubs at NU in arts, photography, robotics, drama, etc. impart the above qualities so essential for competitive survival in professional world, but they lie totally outside the ledger of academic accounting.

To correct this myopic view, B.Tech students can, apart from the regular courses from Humanities & Social Sciences, choose courses based the activities undertaken in the clubs outside the classroom. The necessary academic rigor has been defined to give academic credits to these activity-based courses.

Industry Practice (IP) at Engineering Colleges in B Tech

IP conducted at the site of the organization provides students with an opportunity to gain experience working in interdisciplinary teams on real assignments. The duration of IP is six months. During IP at the computer science colleges, students are guided by a dedicated faculty mentor and a mentor from the organization. Besides technical skills, this semester of B Tech Programmes also helps build strong professional skills including planning, problem-solving, time management, written and verbal communication, cost management, team-work, meeting deadlines, initiative, confidence to complete a task, integrity and customer communication.

NU’s Engineering colleges in B Tech offers the following streams under the B Tech programme:

  1. Computer Science and Engineering (CSE)
  2. Electronics and Communications Engineering (ECE)
  3. Biotechnology (BT)

Minors

The Minor programmeat NUis a separate optional certificate program for B.Tech students that runs in parallel to the degree programme and is offered in areas of study other than the discipline of degree programme. It allows a student to acquire expertise in complementary disciplines thus expanding their horizons and adding value in the industry.

A student has to undertake 3-5 additional courses, one course every Semester, over and above the normal prescribed courses. The programme starts in the 4th Semester of B.Tech. Thus, a student opting for Minor program is required to complete 12-16 additional credits over and above the credits mandated by the B.Tech degree programme and can complete them within the duration of the degree programme. Students will receive separate certificates and transcripts on successful completion of the Minor programme.

Currently minors are offered in Finance, Business Analytics and Entrepreneurship.
