Course Descriptions

Term I

1. ACC 501 Financial Accounting & Analysis

This course provides an introduction to the framework for financial statement analysis and financial statements preparation (statement of financial position, statement of financial performance and comprehensive income, statement of cash flow, funds flow).In order to understand financial statements, students will learn the key accounting concepts and policies that determine the “numbers” presented on financial statements.Students will also be introduced to basic financial analysis techniques.

2. ACC 511 Cost & Management Accounting

This course aims to familiarize the students with cost records/statements and principles underlying them to develop their skills in understanding and appreciating cost information. It will help acquaint them in brief with cost and management accounting mechanics, process and system, but emphasis will be on concepts and their managerial implications. It will also help develop an appreciation about the utility of cost information as a vital input for management information and decision making process.

3. HRM 511 Organizational Behavior

The course aims to help students’ develop an understanding of the behavior of individuals and groups inside organizations. This in turn will help them better understand and appreciate individual, interpersonal, and group processes for increased effectiveness both within and outside of organizations. The course also aims to develop an understanding of the nature, functioning and design of organization as social collectivities. The course also examines the reciprocal relationship between the organizational characteristics (for example : structure, strategies, systems etc) and managerial behavior. It helps develop theoretical and practical insights and problem-solving capabilities for effectively managing the organizational processes.

4. MKT 511 Marketing Management

The course aims to develop the students’ ability to take a combined view of different marketing decisions, i.e., product and brand, pricing, promotions and distribution (placing) and understand how they are interlinked. The course will also enable the student understand how marketing decisions need to be continuously adapted to changes in the micro and macro environments that businesses operate in. The course will provide insights into the step-by-step processes involved in the development of marketing plan, ensuring the successful future positioning and launch of new products/services in the market place. The course will provide real world perspective on topics related to running a business (strategic issues, consumer retention, positioning, etc.).

5. POQ 511 Quantitative Techniques I

The objectives of this course may be specified as follows: to provide a basic tool kit of relevant tools which would be necessary for decision-making; to develop students’ diagnostic and analytic skills through suitable logical problems to types; to develop their ability to measure and judge quantities; to provide a probabilistic base for all functional areas of management,

6. FIN 511 Indian Financial System

The objective of the course is to familiarize students with the Indian Financial System which consists of financial markets, financial intermediation and financial instruments or financial products. This course will give a brief introduction to the entire financial infrastructure in India. The financial institutions to be covered will mainly consist of commercial banks, co-operative banks, regional rural banks (RRBs), all-India financial institutions (AIFIs), non-banking financial companies (NBFCs) and microfinance institutions. The course will give an introduction to the banking sector which forms the bedrock of the Indian financial system, and the regulatory role and functions of the Reserve Bank of India (under the provisions of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949 and the Reserve Bank of India Act, 1934). The financial markets in India to be covered in brief will include the money market, the Government securities market, the foreign exchange market, the capital Market and the credit market, the major players in these markets as well as the regulatory bodies.

7. GSM 511 Managerial Economics

The objective of this course is to equip the manager with the methodology of decision making using the concepts of microeconomics. Starting out with an exposition of the theory of decision making by households and firms, the participants will be made to comprehend the working of the markets, the determination of prices and the techniques of decision making that the players in the market can adopt to ensure that sound decisions are made.

Term II

1. FIN 512 Financial Management

This course aims at familiarizing the students with the financial environment of business, especially the financial markets.Imbibing knowledge about the decisions and decision variables involved in building the liability side of balance sheet of the firm developing the analytical skills by associating the tools and techniques with the situation developing skills for interpretation business information and application of financial theory in financing related decisions. It will also provide an introduction to risk-return framework.

2. POQ 512 Quantitative Techniques II

In this course the major emphasis will be on Statistical Inference. Statistical analysis as a process begins with raw materials, which are numerical or categorical data, the finished products being whatever useful information or valuable conclusions that lie buried among the crude data. No matter how we decide problems arising in the day-do-day operation of a business, in industrial or economic planning, in science, and in everyday life, we must always face the risk of making a wrong choice. It is the task of statistics to evaluate such risks and if possible, to provide criteria which minimize the chance of making wrong decisions. This course will also offer an overview of Operations Research topics such as Linear Programming, Integer and Goal Programming Problems, Markov Chains, Queuing Theory, Dynamic Programming Problems.

3. BNK 502 Commercial Banking

The objectives of this course may be specified as follows: Providing an in-depth analysis of the Indian banking system and commercial banking in the liberalized Indian Economy. Familiarizing the students with banking operation and products. Familiarizing the students with the regulating framework for banks in India. Equipping the students with the tools used in interpreting and evaluating performance, productivity and efficiency of the banking organizations. Equipping the students with the in depth knowledge of financial management in the banking organizations. Familiarizing the students with the new banking practices and processes.

4. GSM 512 Macroeconomics

This course exposes students to an overview of an exchange based economy and draws out the relationship between crucial macroeconomic variables like the level of income, employment, prices, investment, money supply, trade and forex, etc. The design of government policy measures in regulating and planning for the economy will be discussed. Specific problems like inflation, growth and the control of business cycles will be addressed, with respect to the Indian economy. The purpose is to provide the students with a fundamental knowledge of the macro economy on the basis of which policy decisions can be analyzed and business decisions can be made.

5. GSM 522 IT for Managers

The aim of the course is to familiarize students with Basic Computer Concepts – Different generations of computer hardware; Modern taxonomy of computers; Hardware and software; Programming languages, Problem solving and algorithms; Basic computer applications; General idea of information and communication technologies. Input and Output devices; Memory (or storage) devices, Computer Software. Systems software, Application packages, User? written programs. The concept of programming language; fourth generation languages; object code and executable codes; compilers, translators, assemblers; editing tools. Computer networks and Internet. Office applications.IT in Organizations-The Value of Information Systems and Information Technology; Importance of IT to organizations? Basic types of information systems and how are they really used? The players in IT: Leaders or Managers? -the CIO, the project manager, the technical staff, and process manager; Major management trends that affect IT deployment and management? Strategic View-Does IT Matter? CIO Leadership; IT Governance; Tactical View-Project Management-Major knowledge and skill sets (available from the Project Management field) that could be applied to IT (including offshore) management? The variables that impact outsourcing of IT? For example, how does off-shoring affect IT Governance.

6. MKT 512 Consumer Behavior

At the end of the course it is expected that the students will be proficient and knowledgeable about the various disciplines contribution in understanding buyer behavior in a holistic manner familiar with the advances in consumer research in deciphering buyer motivation, and behavior (pre-purchase, purchase and post purchase), impact of social and cultural variables on consumption decisions equipped with frameworks to analyze consumers behavior and use them in designing marketing strategies and in enhancing the effectiveness of marketing programs.

7. CLP 512 Managerial Communication

The objectives of this course may be specified as follows: To enable the students to become aware of their communication skills and sensitize them to their potential to become successful managers. To introduce them to some of the practices in managerial communication that is in vogue. To help them acquire some of the necessary skills to handle day-to-day managerial responsibilities, such as making speeches, controlling one-to-one communication and one-to-many communication; enriching group activities and processes; giving effective presentations, writing letters, memos, minutes, reports, credit notes and advertising copy; maintaining one’s poise in private and in public. To build their confidence and to install competitiveness by projecting a positive image of themselves and of their future. The course will also help develop skills in proposal writing.
