The four-year BTech Program in Computer Science and Engineering is designed to provide students an overview of computing, an understanding of the concepts, principles and skills in their application and extension, and practical experience in applied computing. Special emphasis is laid on the fundamental principles underlying computing and on developing an understanding of the engineering considerations involved in computing system design, implementation and usage. The course provides a background in the basic mathematics of computing—logic, sets, relations and grammars.

Successfully completing the BTech in Computer Science & Engineering program equips students for a career in software engineering or pursuing a higher degree. A variety of focus areas allow each student to customize their learning to target a wide variety of career options such as:

  1. Research in computer science.
  2. Applying computational techniques to solving problems in other basic and applied science (physics, chemistry, biosciences, electrical engineering, etc.).
  3. Developing scientific and mathematical software.
  4. System software development such as device drivers and operating system.
  5. Commercial software development.
  6. Embedded systems.
  7. Mobile application development.
  8. Industrial process control.
  9. Bioinformatics.
  10. IT and mathematics applications in finance.
  11. IT-assisted education

The design of this program allows the students, based upon their aptitude and inclination, to specialize in one of the disciplines emerging from this mother discipline. This includes the disciplines of Computer Science, IT, ICT and Computer Engineering. A 6-month Industry Practice ensures real-life experience in the field, while the R&D Project offers a chance to specialize in specific technologies. With a target faculty to student ratio of 1:15, the NIIT University ensures close interaction and monitoring of each participant’s progress through the program.

  1. Design and development of software for remote-guided vehicles
  2. Development of J2EE and .NET applications for mobile platforms (e.g. a portable tree identification system)
  3. Design and implementation of a biometric sensor based security system
  4. Creating a GIS database for hillocks using GPS-based Surveying techniques
  5. Implementation of software for low-cost numeric control for desktop CNCs
  6. Development and deployment of low-cost Smart boards on campus

Professional Skills including planning ability, analytical ability, problem-solving ability, quality of technical work, ability to meet deadlines, written and verbal communication skills, consideration to cost-effectiveness, customer focus.

Personal Skills includes team-work, initiative, confidence level and integrity.

BTech Industry Practice Program

The Industry Practice program provides students with a chance to gain experience working in interdisciplinary teams on real-life projects of high relevance to an organization. It also helps build a strong resume to secure a good job at the end of the program. Industry Practice is always conducted on-site, and students are treated like regular employees. All office rules such as timings, holidays, dress code, ID card, etc. are applicable to the students. Each Internship lasts for a full 6 months (one semester) to ensure a meaningful and mutually rewarding experience for the student and organization. Sample topics include:

A dedicated faculty mentor provides continued guidance and support, beginning with identifying a suitable project and refining it. Working together, an appointed mentor from the organization and a NIIT University faculty mentor provide inputs, supervise student work and carry out regular evaluations. Evaluation parameters are aligned to industry requirements such as:

Background & Origins

The Practice School Program of BITS, Pilani was created in 1971 by Prof. CR Mitra based upon the Practice School Program at MIT. NIIT Limited refined this methodology to embed Professional Practice into its flagship GNIIT program.  Today, the GNIIT Professional Practice program is the largest education-industry linkage in the world. NIIT University’s Industry Practice Program, in turn, builds upon this cumulative experience to ensure seamless, industry-linked education for all students, thereby laying the foundation to build great careers.
