From the Editor’s desk

Friends,

This was indeed a moment of pride for all at NU. MBA (Finance & Banking), a unique MBA program in collaboration with ICICI Bank commenced at NU with distinguished luminaries from ICICI Bank attending the Orientation Program. NU family welcomes the students of MBA (Finance and Banking) who have surely made their presence felt in a few days. As our regular feature on Community Connect, we share how innovative learning strategies help solve real life problems in a skilful manner. All through the month, the students were enriched with talks by dynamic Industry experts. A melodious musical evening organized by SPIC MACAY further added to the vibrant atmosphere.

University life is an exciting time for all, be it the BTechs or the MBAs – and to excel what one needs is adequate groundwork. As the adage goes, ‘Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity”, it is important to make the most of opportunities by being adequately prepared.

As they eagerly await their Board exam results as well as the competitive exam scores, it is this preparation that ought to be the focus of Class 12 students. Right from the admission process to facing Interviews, there is a basic expectation level that needs to be met and students need to be well equipped to meet the challenges that today’s dynamic and uncertain environment holds for them. The special feature this month highlights the academic preparedness that would help Class 12 students face interviews in eminent universities and colleges.

We wish all the students the very best for their Board Exam results! Do write to us for any guidance that might be needed in deciding the right career stream.

Shradha Kanwar.

Academic Preparedness for Facing Interviews top Newsletter April 2011
The famous words of Abraham Lincoln , ‘If I was given six hours to chop a tree, I would spend the first four sharpening the axe’, definitely stresses the fact that practice and preparation can only enhance one’s chances for success in an interview.

academic Newsletter April 2011

Getting shortlisted for an interview is an achievement in itself and one should make the most of this opportunity.

You never get a second chance to make the first impression top Newsletter April 2011
With practice and preparation, you can become equipped with a repertoire of effective body language techniques. This can make you effective in communicating your strengths to the potential Institute if you express the body language of confidence during the interview.

The Day of the Interview top Newsletter April 2011
‘An interview is as much about what is said as what is not said.’

Practicing in front of a mirror works brilliantly. You will be more impressive at an interview if you have prepared well by rehearsing your facial gestures, actions and responses.

Before the interview

  • Pack several copies of your resume, references and letters of recommendation.
  • Arrive ten minutes prior to the start of the interview.
  • Make sure to dress appropriately.
  • Be calm and poised while waiting for the interview.
  • Observe to get an understanding of the ethos of the University.

During the interview

Greeting- It is important to wish all members of the Interview panel and be polite and respectful while talking.

Handshake- is an invitation to demonstrate why you are the prospective candidate for the job. A polite, firm handshake conveys confidence and professionalism.

Facial Expression- Try to keep your verbal and facial expressions synchronized. Smile, when the opportunity calls but avoid the nervous grin or the incessant smile.

Posture- Try to adopt a posture that shows your interest in the job. Slouching in your chair might give the impression that you are not interested in the job. While sitting on the edge of you chair can come across as being nervous and tense. Therefore, sit upright but not too stiffly in your chair.

Movement- It is advisable to rest your hands loosely clasped in your lap or on the table. How you position your head also sends a message. Tilting your head very slightly to one side comes across as friendly and open.

Not a one way conversation top Newsletter April 2011
Remember to listen attentively and respond intelligently. Remember, an Interview is not a one way conversation. Therefore, it is important to participate and maintain a cordial atmosphere along with ensuring the right degree of formality.

Although practice and preparation help you get a high degree of confidence- while actually facing an interview, be your natural self. Do not appear too rehearsed in your responses as well as body language.

Don’t try to go overboard with being too talkative or too reserved. Enjoy the learning experience and BE YOURSELF.

The best is meant for you top Newsletter April 2011
best meant Newsletter April 2011Sometimes students get disillusioned because they are not able to get selected in the University or Institute of their choice. It is no doubt a slightly disheartening moment but do remember that it is a temporary phase which is soon going to get over. This also holds true for students appearing for the endless competitive exams where it is suddenly discovered that their preparations are being tested time and again. Always remember, if good opportunities don’t come your way, that’s only because you deserve the BEST!

Laughter is the best medicine top Newsletter April 2011
Humor, laughter, hilarity and a smile form an integral part of us, our lives. A language understood by all, smile and laughter bring people close, make them gorgeous and adorable. It helps you pass the troughs of life with levelness and less stress. And obviously humor is an outcome of people who are full of it and know the right timing and situation. So I decided to postulate a theory unfolding different kind of jokes hence fun created by them to best of my knowledge, wit, experience and inexperience.

bull Newsletter April 2011 Life Threatening Jokes- Generally these kinds of jokes are cracked by that segment of society which happens to get 98.6% in class 10th and 96.2% in 12th. They are hardly understood by normal respiring human beings and sometimes the waves generated by these jokes damage perennial lobes of children affecting their IQ and general intelligence. Even high dosage of parental guidance can’t help understand them. All you can do is ask God to bless them and just overlook them with a smile. After the first joke, do not stand near the teller as these jokes are like earthquake waves, another one is always expected after the first one.
bull Newsletter April 2011 ‘I am a smart ass’ Jokes- This type of humor, rather unwanted skill, is mostly possessed by wannabes. They think they are very smart ‘dudes’. They hunt jokes online and mug up Reader’s Digest till late night and practice the punch lines in front of the mirror just to impress girls. But sadly they don’t get the same ‘joke situation’ so they try to create it and ultimately they end up falling under the ‘Life Threatening Jokes’ category. They also forget that other people sometimes do access internet or read Reader’s Digest. Poor guys!
bull Newsletter April 2011 Professor Jokes- Nothing to write much, you just don’t get them, neither the professor nor their jokes. They tend to crack jokes when they think that the entire class has almost slept and now it is time to smash the monotony. They have no idea that how much pain we students have to go through to express amusement at them. It hurts! And all those who laugh at them fall under the first category. All I can say to them is be interesting and creative to avoid such situations.
bull Newsletter April 2011 ‘Mera Naam Joker’- They are God sent. Look around you, there are many like these around. They don’t make up jokes; they themselves are a joke, a joke to humanity, to mother earth and to the mirror. They are the result of a strike by the chemists. They say ‘Hi’ to you in the morning and you feel like laughing at them till you faint. They are the best stress busters and you just have to look at them or in extreme cases, think about them to get de-stressed. You laugh a lot at jokes made by them because you are actually laughing at them, or their hairstyle, or their clothes or the saliva coming of their mouths while telling the joke. You should always have an acquaintance like this for the bad times in your life.
bull Newsletter April 2011 The Rutherford Humor- These jokes are generally cracked by scientists and highly educated science students as they make up jokes out of Laws of Motion or Theory of Relativity or Boyle’s Law in a gathering where those people are present who think that Einstein is the word which the Physicists use while swearing and abusing junior Physicists. They tend to laugh very loudly at their own jokes without giving a damn about others.
bull Newsletter April 2011 The Real Players- They are the ones who know what humor actually is. They take out humor even out of a psychology lecture or while walking alone at night. They never consider making a joke, the humor comes out naturally. I believe that they are, unknowingly, kind of social workers because they are spreading hilarity and smile all over without any personal expectations. Smile is a gift which you can anytime gift to a stranger, a beggar, a patient, a frustrated sweeper, a stressed out father, an idle sitting friend, an angry girlfriend, a tired bus conductor, an irritated maid and who not. Moreover, humor helps them to survive most of the intricate and thorny times they face in life. They cross many hurdles just by joking upon themselves. For me, they are the real Laughing Buddhas who bring joy, sanctity and happiness to society.

Learning Strategies: Life Skills top Newsletter April 2011
Learning is a lifelong journey. It is observed that those who apply innovative learning strategies also solve real life problems in a skillful manner. It may be called problem solving technique or learning by discovery. The truth remains that real life offers many opportunities to achieve successful strategies for learning hidden in problematic situations sprinkled with unforeseeable challenges.

Indulgent teachers feel proud of their pupil when they apply theoretical text-based learning to meet real life practice-oriented environment.

This is what was observed when situational resources prompted NUmentors to discover, understand and apply interesting ways to meet the needs of their mentees at the village.

Expert Teachers & Special Attention

At Majra Kath , Akash, Priyanka, Latika and their team of NUmentors discovered benefits of team teaching.

They chose the subject matter they could handle best and then rotated amongst students to teach in such a way that one student, to tackle different difficult topics, got attention of three different mentors.

This rotation within the team helped the mentors to deliver more in a short span of time, kept attention span active and added range to a learning instance.

Learning Numbers is Fun

Difficulties in learning mathematics must be a familiar issue with many young learners. Difficulty level also arises from a displaced feeling that mathematics is far from everyday life.

Rishabh, NUmentor at Pratap Singh Pura primary school discovered the other way round. He observed that his mentee could manage speed mathematical procedures when it related to everyday measurement instances.

In doing so, he noticed that his mentee were unknowingly applying complex mathematical strategies. This observation leads to reaffirmation of his individual understanding of the subject matter.

Detailed specifics of these learning instances will also be shared in forthcoming issues.

-as told to Dr. Sumit Kaur Bhatia, Connect Team , Community Connect, NU, Neemrana, April 25, 2011
